IT & Software Resume Examples

Resume examples for software, data, and IT roles: structured to surface your stack, shipped impact, and the keywords ATS filters scan for.

Stack match decides the first cut

Technology hiring begins with a literal comparison between the technologies in the posting and the strings in your document. This is why the skills section carries disproportionate weight and why its ordering matters: leading entries are weighted more heavily by both parsers and humans. List the technologies you would be comfortable being interviewed on, put the primary one first, and resist the urge to pad. A twenty-item stack invites an interviewer to select the item you know least well.

Scale is the fastest proxy for the problems you have met

Two engineers can use identical tools on entirely different problems. Requests per second, users served, data volume, number of services, cluster size, transaction throughput and team size tell a reader what constraints you have actually operated under. A system serving two hundred internal users and one serving eight million daily requests demand different engineering, and without the numbers a reader assumes the smaller.

Design-heavy resumes fail before a person sees them

Technology candidates are the most likely to reach for skill-rating bars, radar charts, logo grids and two-column layouts, and these are precisely the elements that do not survive parsing. A technology name that exists only inside an image cannot be matched. Self-rated proficiency out of five conveys nothing verifiable. The strongest technical resumes are visually plain and dense with specifics, which is also how senior engineers write.

Show what you decided, not only what you delivered

Seniority in technology reads through judgement. The trade-off taken, the approach rejected and why, the migration sequenced to avoid downtime, the feature killed after the data came back. These signal a level that a list of shipped work cannot. This holds across the discipline: for an engineer it is architecture, for a QA engineer it is where the test boundary sits, for a product manager it is what was not built.

IT & Software resume FAQ

How do you make a tech resume pass an ATS?

Keep every technology name as selectable plain text rather than inside an image, a graphic or a skill-rating bar, since anything rendered as a picture cannot be matched. Use a single-column layout with standard section headings (Experience, Skills, Education, Projects) because unusual headings and sidebar layouts are the two most common causes of content being parsed out of order or skipped. Mirror the job posting's exact spelling of each technology, including punctuation such as Node.js or CI/CD, as matching is literal. Put contact details in the body of the document rather than in a header, which some parsers do not read.

Should a tech resume be one page or two?

One page up to roughly five years of experience and two pages beyond that. The reasoning is practical rather than dogmatic: the first page receives most of the reader's attention, so anything that must be seen has to live there. Engineers with longer careers should compress early roles to a single line each (title, company, dates) and spend the recovered space on the two most recent positions. Academic projects and coursework should disappear entirely once there is professional experience to replace them, and a personal projects section earns its place only when it shows something the day job does not.

What should a fresher put on a tech resume with no work experience?

Projects, written like professional work rather than like coursework. For each one give what the system does, the stack, the scale it handles, and the part that was genuinely difficult: two substantial projects with real detail outperform six tutorial clones. Internships count as experience and should be listed as such with the team and what you actually shipped. Open-source contributions that were merged, packages with real download numbers, and competitive programming or hackathon results are all legitimate evidence. Include a GitHub link only if the pinned repositories have README files and the profile is not full of abandoned forks.
