How to write a project engineer resume

  1. State the project value, duration and contract type

    Contract value, schedule length and whether the work was EPC, item-rate, lump-sum turnkey or a FIDIC-based international contract define the commercial environment. Contract type in particular changes the job substantially and is rarely stated.

  2. Give schedule and cost performance as indices

    Schedule and cost performance indices under earned value management, variance against baseline, and float consumed are the vocabulary of project control. Using them correctly signals formal training; "completed on time" does not, and invites the question of against which baseline.

  3. Name the planning tool and what you did in it

    Primavera P6 and MS Project are the standards, but the differentiator is the work: building the baseline schedule, resource loading, running the critical path, integrating multiple contractor schedules, or producing progress and delay analysis. Say which.

  4. Describe the coordination scope

    Number of disciplines coordinated, contractors and vendors managed, and the interfaces held: client, consultant, statutory authorities. Multi-discipline coordination is the substance of project engineering and headcount alone does not convey it.

  5. Include claims, variations and risk work

    Variation orders processed, extension-of-time claims prepared or defended, and risk register ownership. This commercial side of project engineering is where senior roles are won and it is almost always missing from resumes at the mid level.

  • Distinguish between managing a project and supporting one; use action verbs like 'delivered', 'controlled', and 'coordinated' to be explicit.

  • Name Primavera P6 explicitly if you use it; many EPC job descriptions list it as a mandatory requirement and ATS filters on the exact name.

Common mistakes on a project engineer resume

  • Omitting contract type. It defines the commercial environment and its absence flattens very different experience.
  • Saying "delivered on time" with no baseline. Project control has a vocabulary and not using it signals informal experience.
